This is quite a jump from *SON OF ITALY*.
In The Italian we observe the representation of the first form of integration into society: while Pascal was single, isolated, almost an atom floating unbound, here we have the molecule of organized society, the family.
Pascal ran away from the Italian nightmare. Beppo came with a dream, a solid goal and a plan to reach it.
Pascal is not seeking connections with the world around himself (like the vampire). Beppo gets entangled with Corrigan. Is the common message that they are both rejected by America?
The common message can be said that they are both rejected by America but it can also be said that Pascal at least adapted more to life in America. Although the experience of coming to America was hard for Pascal he did end up learning English and adapting to have poems published in magazines. On the other hand with Beppo, he was also able to adapt in such a way that he started a shoeshine stand but his outcome was a little more tragic cause he lost his son due to the fact that he was robbed and then put away by the police for trying to get his money back to provide for his family. They were both able to adapt to being in America in a way but they weren't necessarily accepted by America.
