ReplyDeleteThe particular issue I found most interesting was the part in the lecture that talked about tribes. I realized when talking about tribes the context in which I thought about them was very misinformed and a narrow way of thinking cause I haven't learned much about different types of tribes out there to know what they are like.

Yes, when I thought about what a tribe is, I pictured this very old and classic image of what tribes are made to be. But, although we have developed into a more advanced society (in terms of technology), we still operate by very similar societal rules, like tribes.
DeleteI, like you, feel that I have been misinformed on what the word tribe means. I never thought of it as more then a group of people (Native American tribe came to mind). I believe that the definition of the word is different to each individual and is based on how they view society and how society views them.
DeleteSomething that really grabbed my attention from Lecture 1 was the tribe tests. These are tests that one could be used to determine who is considered family or people who are really close to us. Although our tribes are constituted of many people we don't know we find ourselves having such strong connections to. It makes me wonder whether these emotional ties and unity plays a role in the separation between ethnicities we have in America today.
ReplyDeleteThe tribe tests were interesting to me as well in that aspect. Tribes are known to be very tight knit groups and often have the same hardships or something of mutual interest that brings them together which as you said helps them to find that strong connection. And I can see how that would have an effect to how we interact with each other in today's society in terms of ethnicity as well. Often, not always, people tend to stick to and get to know people mostly in their own ethnicity.
DeleteWhat truly stood out to me from lecture 1 was the Italian Cartoons. I feel that history has a way of repeating itself, just with different victims and that the media is such a strong influence on how people view other people. America, land of the free, is free to judge and to be prejeduce against those that are different or are viewed as less than. I think that the way that Italian immigrants were viewed was horrible but very similar to how many middle eastern people are perceived and also how black and Latinos are perceived. The message of "not wanted" was clear in all of the images, and is similar to the message that we see today.
ReplyDeleteThis was the reaction I had to the Italian Cartoons as well. It was very hard to look at these things and see how people interpreted the immigration of Italian Americans just because they were different from what they were use to and also to see the length they went through to slander Italian Americans was baffling. Seeing the role that stereotypes play on how people perceive other people without getting to know them or understanding their culture is what I believe to be one of the biggest injustice of this world.
